History

Before it was a part of Shelby County, Arlington’s roots trace back to the early 19th century. Well before the Withe Depot paved the way for Arlington’s longevity, the land was inhabited by the Chickasaw Nation.

The indigenous community’s presence in the region began its sharp decline in 1818, when a pivotal treaty ceded the land to the United States and a handful of early settlers came in from the east.

Just a year later in 1819, the land was including into Shelby County, which was named after Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War veteran and the first governor of Kentucky. Fewer than 20 settlers began to lay the foundation of the community we now know as Arlington.

The town’s initial name, however, was Haysville. It was a tribute to General Samuel J. Hays, a descendant of President Andrew Jackson and the town’s most significant landowner. Haysville jumped up to 200 in population by 1856, due to the Withe Depot for the Memphis & Ohio Railroad company, with the depot becoming a central point for the community. However, the events surrounding the Civil War and a yellow fever outbreak in 1878 temporarily halted its growth.

Just five years later in 1883, the town would experience its most notable change. In order to establish a distinct post office, the town name was changed to Arlington, inspired by the serene beauty of Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. This not only served to rebrand the town but also set the stage for a new chapter in its history.

Growth

Between 2000 and 2010, Arlington experienced a staggering 348% increase in population, making it one of the top three fastest-growing communities in Tennessee. When the community received its charter back in 1900, it had just over 600 residents.

By its centennial celebration in 2000, that number had grown to over 2,300. Arlington’s small-town charm, modern features, and nearby attractions have played a significant role in the remarkable growth of recent years.

By turning the town into a bustling hub for shipments and trade, the Memphis & Ohio Railroad’s 19th century development set the stage for Arlington’s 20th century growth. Despite facing challenges during the World Wars, the mid 90s century experienced Arlington’s resilience. Until 2000, the town’s population began to climb steadily, reflecting its adaptability and enduring spirit.

Present-day Arlington isn’t just a historical landmark, but a thriving community of around 15,000. With schools, churches, businesses, and an active industrial district, the town is always in motion. Events like “Arlington in April” and the “Christmas Parade” highlight Arlington’s community spirit and its respect for its heritage. Here, tradition and modernity come together, offering a unique experience for all who reside within.

Arlington showcases how towns can intertwine their historical roots with contemporary developments. This harmonious blend of the previous and present positions Arlington as a perfect place to park your past and step into the future.
